Empty Cage Cleaning Procedures
Updated 5/26/2023
These instructions are for cages that have cats in them. If a cage is empty, use the General Cage Cleaning Procedures
1 | Determine if cage is ready to be cleaned
If there is no cat and no kennel card, or if the kennel card says "ADOPTED", it's generally safe to clear out the cage.
2 | Remove blankets, toys, and dishes
Pull out any blankets or soft toys and put them in the laundry bin. Put dishes and any hard toys with other dishes to be sanitized.
3 | Sanitize the cage with Rescue
Clear debris and spray all surfaces lightly with Rescue (even metal door, door handle, inside the round cubby holes, and underneath the ledge); let Rescue set for 10 minutes; wipe/scrub all surfaces well with damp rag. Dry the bottom surfaces (or wait for them to dry) before setting up.
If you are unable to sanitize and set up the cage for the next cat, hang a clean washcloth between bars of the cage door to indicate that it needs sanitizing. If a note says for staff to clean condo, leave it for them to take care of.
Rescue MUST sit on cage surfaces for at least 10 minutes
4 | Set up for the next cat
CONDOS
Place one or two single sheets of newspaper in large area
Place an empty, upside down litter pan in the back right corner.
Place two empty bowls upside down in front left side (near but not directly under the cubby opening).
Put a blanket in each of the small cubby areas.

METAL CAGES
Place one or two single sheets of newspaper in each of the two areas.
Place an empty, upside-down litter pan on one side.
On the other side, fold up a box and place a small blanket inside.
In the same side, place two empty bowls upside down.
In the metal cages, don’t forget to put a box in EACH side.
