Special Instructions
Extremely Spicy/Feral/Quarantined Cats
Use the partitions in the condo or the extra partitions to isolate the cat in a cubby while cleaning.
If you are not comfortable cleaning the cage, please alert staff or the shift lead, and they will handle it.
Leather gloves are available in C1.
If a cat is very stressed you may place a cloth cover over the door. These thinner, small blankets can be found in the tubs in the cat rooms marked "condo covers." Use the small binder clips to fasten to the bars on the door (not on the outermost rungs). Be sure to place the cover underneath the Kennel Card.
Multiple Kittens
Generally we save the fold-up boxes for the metal cages, but when there are several 4-8 week old kittens, it can be helpful to place these boxes in the back right corner of the condo, and place the litterbox to the left under the ledge. This allows them to learn to jump up and gives them more room to work out their energy.
Make sure multiple kittens have several toys.
Place food on the bottom or in cubbies as kittens may not be able to jump up to the higher ledges yet.
Moms with Kittens
Please disturb as little as possible, but check to be sure that the kittens are doing well.
Check that kittens are feeding well - they go downhill quickly! BE VIGILANT!
If a kitten seems lethargic or in bad shape, take it back to medical ASAP.
Sick Cats
Be aware of signs indicating ringworm, coccidia, or other contagious diseases. Signs indicating which cats are sick are available in C1 and can be placed on clipboards of cages and condos with sick cats. The public should not handle these cats.
ALWAYS wear gloves with these cats. You may need to go through multiple pairs.
Be especially careful what you are touching. especially regarding common items such as litter scoops, and the water bucket on the cleaning cart.
Once the cat has left, staff will likely need to clean these condos with a different process, so do not attempt to clean.
Smarty Pants Cats
Teach tricks! If you find an especially smart, treat-motivated cat, there are some laminated sheets on the wall in C1 (middle section) with ideas. If you have success and can get some video, post to Facebook or email us the video!
